My Pick of the day is this LP by Pop 1280.  This album reflects exactly how I feel right now.  Anti social and enjoying it .

New York’s Pop. 1280 are back with their debut full-length for Sacred Bones The Horror. This record comes almost one year after their highly-praised EP The Grid and it finds the band exploring new territory and perversions. Chief songwriters Chris Bug and Ivan Lip are now joined by drummer Zach Ziemann (ex-Twin Stumps) and bassist/sonic manipulator Pascal Ludet. Recording for The Horror took place at the Python Patrol basement studios in Brooklyn with engineer Ben Greenberg (Z’s Pygmy Shrews). The Horror showcases a lot more improvisation and in-studio writing giving the album a darker more unhinged organic feeling. This new approach let the band stretch out more and while they haven’t lost the synth-punk skronk that has gotten them compared to Pussy Galore D.A.F. and Cop Shoot Cop The Horror adds longer songwriting explorations and psychedelic-scapes that reference bands like Cabaret Voltaire Chrome and early Sonic Youth. Thematically The Horror finds Pop. 1280 stepping out of the cyberspace of The Grid and into the deserted beaches highways and plains of a surreal hell. It’s the road album for the post-apocalypse.

Moral Hex who along with their Portland brethren ARCTIC FLOWERS, BELLICOSE MINDS, THE ESTRANGED, etc have been delving into the darker side of post punk for a few years now and their latest recording seem to illuminate parts of their sound that were obscured by raw production on their demo. There is still a slight peace punk tinge to the music (and more than that in the artwork and lyrics) and the pacing of the record is very punk albeit much more rhythmically complex and and danceable but the influence of death rock and “gothic” music is more apparent now than ever. Moral Hex does this sound with an intensity that is much times missing in favor of detached moodiness. On songs like “Corporate” the band even brings march to a fever pitch of pure anger as well as the more depressive and morose tones inherent. This record has been a labor of love for us and the band and despite many set backs we hope you enjoy this now and forever! 300 pressed all black vinyl.

Patch is screenprinted with shimmering silver ink and the trim is sewn to give it a great finished look.

My pick of the day walks the line with all kinds of our favorite evil cult musical devices and really makes us realize that there is still musicians out there who can intrigue our ears with a hearty mix of weird and convention.  Of course we love it with more weird than not, but this LP will not disappoint fans of the death rock, minimal synth, evil shoegaze atmospheric (if that is one) genres…read on….

From the super obscuro realm of Spanish minimalist syth, blackened goth hypnotism, and satanic post punk ritual dance comes In Death It Ends courtesy of the Scrap Metal Mag label. Although this music is danceable and has a slight industrial tinge this band takes the atmospheric and blasphemous qualities of heathen black metal and wind it up to a tense post punk rant. Very recommended to those who seek to expand the borders of their depression. Very limited colored vinyl and selling out as we speak.

Today is Sunday and it definitely feels like one. Late starting and trying my best to muster up some inspiration on an beautiful, and rare, over cast day here in Orange County. Very mellow and content to do very little and some of the best music we have gotten in this week to facilitate such merry sloth are two LPs one by NYC’s Babies called “Our House On the Hill” which is a super group of sorts that started out as a side project but seems to be getting better with every release and they have even done tours. I didn’t even know or expect that this band has members of Vivian Girls and Woods in it and when I heard this record especially I was just struck by what a great combination of voices and kinda lo fi music with some beautiful production accents it was. Turns out that its like if you took the Vivians’ kind of primal melodic stomp and mixed it with Woods’ more countrified rock n roll swagger you get Babies. Woolen Kits with their new LP “Four Girls” has a very mellow melodic vibe vocally but picks up the pace substantially and gives their bash some rock n roll dirt underneath their nails. Very simple and slightly tuned as only the Aussies can seem to do right almost EVERY time (see my personal faves UV RACE and EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING for the more punk instances of this phenomena) Woolen Kits rock out but don’t skimp on the lazy and beautiful melodic flow.
